RECs toward LEED Certification

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the leading standard for the design, construction and operation of energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly buildings. LEED's guidelines provide building contractors, owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED encourages a whole-building approach to sustainability by measuring performance in five key categories: Sustainable Site Development, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resource Selection, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Onsite renewable energy generation and Green-e RECs qualify for points in the Energy & Atmosphere category.

LEED for Existing Buildings (4 points) 1 point for each 3% of the building’s total energy use produced by on-site renewable energy and/or 1 point for each 25% of total energy use purchased as off-site Green-e certified power.

LEED for New Construction (4 points) 1 point for the first 2.5% of the building’s total energy use that is produced by on-site renewable energy, 1 point for each additional 5% (up to 12.5%) and 1 point if 35% of the building’s electricity is balanced with Green-e certified RECs.

LEED for Commercial Interiors (2 points) ½ point for each 5% of total energy use that is produced by on-site renewable energy and 1 point if at least 50% of the building's electricity is balanced with Green-e certified RECs.

LEED for Homes (10 points) 1 point for every 5% of annual electricity load produced by on-site renewable energy.

LEED for Core & Shell (2 points) 1 point if at least 1% of the building's total energy is produced by on-site renewable energy and 1 point if at least 35% of the building's electricity is balanced with a green power purchase for two years.
